Our Story
It was late, that September night, 2:33 AM to be exact. There I sat, in a dimly lit room with nothing but a #2 pencil and an old burrito wrapper. I couldn’t sleep. I was cold and hungry, but too lazy to move. In the distance, I could hear the chirping of the crickets. I thought it must be mating season.
I had only been part of the Detroit comedy scene for a short time, but I was ready. I wanted to bring laughter to the people. I wanted to create more opportunities for people like me, a local comedian. I wanted to create a fun way for non-profit groups to raise money and help HR people make corporate events more fun. I wanted to give the average Joe an opportunity to book a comedian for a backyard BBQ or a surprise birthday party.
I thought wow, a company like that would be amazing. But what would I call this company? I grabbed my pencil and began to write. By the time I fell asleep that night, I had scribbled down 42 possible names on that old burrito wrapper.
I spent the next week, researching business names; turned out none of the original 42 would work. I was determined to find a name that was easy to remember, easy to spell and connected us to our roots. I was brainstorming in the shower one morning, something I do a lot, when I came up with the name Great Lakes Comedy. I though that’s it! I dried off and ran to my computer. That’s a lie, I walked to my computer. I don’t run anywhere. I checked the name, it was available and so was the web address. A few days later, I registered the name and got to work on all the things that I needed to do to create an amazing company that I could be proud of and one that would help to shape the future of the Detroit comedy scene.
